What difference does it make?
Having been relieved of the prophetic office, I sense it is more of a promotion than anything punitive. For me, the only significance is the habits of mind cannot be the same. There is no question of, “That’s not my job anymore.” Rather, there is a new mission that is actually more difficult.
There reason I’ve kept this blog going for over five years now is only partly because of a sense of mission. The simplest answer is that I can’t shut up; I’m a garrulous man. The newer mission does not require that I stop blogging, but that I be even more circumspect about what I write. I’m more likely to address safe topics, like computers and methods. Too much of what I have to say can’t be reduced to mere words. The message won’t fit on my t-shirts any more; it has to be framed differently.
In other words, I’ll be required to communicate most in what I don’t say.
I’m still working out how that can be typed into blog posts.
