It’s never what I expect. That has never hindered me serving fruitfully, but it seems to be a given that I’ll be looking in the wrong direction when it comes. So I have learned to spend less time on developing my expectations and more on my sensitivity.
Sometimes when you find yourself not really in the mood to go in the only direction left open, you realize you are holding up the progress. It really doesn’t matter what it’s all about, only that we learn the underlying moral truth. That’s why we have to hold our expectations very loosely, because we’ll need to drop them at the right moment.
It’s not like you are in sin for having expectations. We are so very limited in this fallen state that we could hardly expect to understand much, and most of what we can understand isn’t worth much against the truth in the first place. You walk in the light you have, knowing it will surely lead you in some sharp turns. Not because God intends to confuse you, but you aren’t anywhere near the right place. You need to think in terms of how much work it is for God to get you where He intended when He made you.
It’s less a matter of needing a clear vision and simply having a pure commitment.
