Pirates Are a Tame Reponse

Let’s imagine I live near a major road. You pass by on the road pretty regularly. From time to time, you stop and relieve yourself on my front porch. You also have a tendency to snatch fruit from my tree, and pull vegetables from my garden. And you aren’t alone. You and a bunch of other folks do the same thing. Do you suppose I might seek a way to express a little hostility at those of you who pass by?

It’s pure propaganda to call the Somali fishermen “pirates”. They may lack imagination, but you’ll notice they are not known for harming anybody, just demanding money. When you consider we’ve participated in dumping toxic waste on their north coast, and supported others overfishing off their south coast, I’m surprised they don’t blow up our vessels.

Nobody has clean hands. Since I live in the US, it’s morally appropriate to focus on the sins of my own government.
