If you have a nice LCD, count yourself blessed, indeed. I’m still stuck with this old Dell D-1028L. While the 17″ screen is big enough, and I don’t at all mind viewing at 1024×768, this thing drives me nuts on the console. It insists on running at 60Hz, which is the worst for human eyes. After three days, it was downright painful. Under X, that resolution at least runs at 85Hz, much better for the eyes.
So I finally broke down and installed Xfce4, because I didn’t want to move away from Squeeze. It’s working okay, but I’m still doing lots of work from the Xterms. The only other advantage with working that way if full access to the keystrokes. For some reason, Debian insists on crippling the console keymap so that I can’t use very many CTRL+ key combinations, and precious few ALT+. The documentation falls into the space just over my head, with not a clue anywhere on the Net how to parse the stinking keymap files to make adjustments.
I have chosen a life which includes living in poverty, so I’m not grousing about that, but I can certainly grouse about Dell, of all companies, ignoring human needs by making the default frequency on the monitor the worst possible one.
