Trail and Shingle

This past couple of weeks I’ve been actually doing a day’s work most days.

I’ve been helping my brother with his roof. We stripped it all down and put down decking. We also changed the angle of parts of it by adding trusses. He decided to use a very wide flashing on everything. Since I had some experience with flashing, that was one of my jobs. No, not an expert, just more comfortable than he or his other helpers. (Did you know you can fold a sheet lengthwise using your feet and a couple of short two-by-four sections?) He opted for regular composition shingles, so it’s pretty time consuming. With another day or two of work, it will all be finished.

I’ve also been working on my trail again. This past summer it was completely inaccessible due to a very heavy infestation of deer ticks and chiggers. We finally had some cool weather this month which drove these suckers back into the soil for awhile, then a good hard freeze. This allowed me to get back out and clear away an entire summer’s growth. Make that a fairly wet summer for us, with very substantial regrowth of underbrush and tall grass. In several sections, I had grass as tall as me.

You would have thought there had never been a trail in some areas. I’ve been trying to get it cleared enough for the kin folks to use it during our annual Thanksgiving Day festivities. I’m going to have to cheat, though, and drag my lawn mower out to get parts of it cleared in time. The section I wanted to reroute will have to wait, and much of it will not be actually clean, but still passable.
