Disavowing Seen and Unseen

The title is a reference to a couple of services run out of Iceland — Seen.is and Unseen.is — that I didn’t know were such nitwits about networking and encryption. I once recommended them, but grew increasingly annoyed at their inability to do some of the simplest things when it comes to customer service.

So here’s the lowdown: Their encryption is home-brewed. Never, ever do that unless you know at least as much as the NSA specialists. Let’s just say that there are so few people of that caliber today that none of them would have time to work with the folks at Unseen. There are so very many good, publicized encryption algorithms out there that you simply cannot justify rolling your own.

Other problems: They don’t know how to do webpages. I’ve told them there were problems and things haven’t changed in six months. The offer apps for various platforms and I’ve never gotten any of them to work for more than a day. Their latest offering for Linux is based on the ancient Ubuntu 12.04 (14.04 is the last stable release almost two years ago; 12.04 four years old). Their site has been in “beta” since it opened. When paid customers request support, the response is often condescending and pointless.

Their other project is a site called “Before It’s News.” I won’t even give you a link; it’s one of the wildest wacko conspiracy “news” sites you will ever see. I’m the first to tell you that there are genuine conspiracies out there, but these folks are way off in La-la Land. They report stuff that makes you wonder if it’s linked from a parody site. At first I thought this might not matter too much, but apparently they apply some of the same thinking to their “deep knowledge” of networking. Recently I found out that network technicians are shocked anyone lets them own a server.

I apologize for not checking more carefully before recommending any of their services.
