Email Providers

I’m not a cheapskate; I’m a charity case.

GMX.net in Germany: One of my longest standing free email providers has become disappointing. It’s that same silly nonsense about demanding my cellphone number so they can text me stuff in case I get locked out or whatever. I understand and I’m not angry, but I think it’s time to move on because they aren’t serving my interests any more. I’m not in a hurry, but I can see the writing on the wall.

It’s the only account I have based outside the US. Do I have to explain why that matters? Call it a strong preference, but not a necessity. I need a different service that is less likely to do that trendy crap with me, and still outside the US. I don’t care if it’s webmail only. It would be nice if it was in English, but I can work with some foreign languages.

I realize just about any service I use is likely to disappear without notice. Even the biggest operations can simply fold overnight. Still, I’m hoping to find something solid. Let’s eliminate: I won’t use GMail, Yahoo, Microsoft, or some of the other big names.

Tell me dear readers: What would you recommend?

Thanks, Benjamin. Interesting list; must be an old webpage because at least one redirects to a porn site. I was hoping for something one of my readers had actually used themselves or knew about.

Sorry about that. I didn’t precheck any of them beyond hovering over the link to see which ones might offer a .com address so it would be less distinguishable as a foreign provider. I think there were two, Pinoymail (supposed to be Phillipines, but the domain is registered with GoDaddy in the USA and the registrant is from Brazil) and Mixmail (registered in Spain as the website claims).

You were trying to help, Benjamin, and I appreciate it. This is not something that can be resolved in a day or two, but I asked my readers to pitch in because of my confidence in them. I haven’t looked at the FreeSite in ages and they’ve changed a bit since then.

  2. I can offer no help. I use the Big Names – principally Gmail. Whatever your choice, stay away from Yahoo Mail – pointless service now, in my opinion. Hotmail seems to do quite well in not loading you with the craptastic stuff. I would’ve preferred The Small Names myself like you do, but there seems no getting around the biggies nowadays.
